Neve 1073's and 1272's

The Story

As digital gear started becoming more popular, I started thinking about who might be dumping all their analog gear in favor of digital gear. I tried a theory and found a place that was doing just that. I went by and they gave me a couple of limiters that they had marked for the trash. As we looked around we found an old closet that had all their Neve manuals and a bunch or cardboard boxes. They said this they were spare part for the BCM 10, which they were pretty sure they no longer used and if so all these spares were trash (the way they depreciate their gear, they are not allowed to sell it, they have to give it away or throw it away). The problem was that they couldn't figure out if they were still using the BCM 10.

It took a year for me to track down someone who could definitely answer the question. They had gotten rid of it years before. I had that person send a quick email to the person who had the keys to the closet and set up at time to pick everything up.

I hadn't had an opportunity to look to close, but when I got everything back to the studio, I had a few 1889 routing modules, and the 1073's and 1272's as shown in the picture. The 1073's had been used just a little which was a good thing as the caps didn't dry out. They were wrapped in plastic and sealed in their original boxes. I took them to Nat Priest who found them to be up to factory specs with all original parts. He installed them into an original nine channel Neve rack.

The 1272's were wrapped in plastic in factory sealed boxes. They had never passed audio. I sent them to Brent Averill for racking, where Avedis told me they had never seen 1272's in this condition.

While it may sound like an urban legend, it's a true story. (And... no, the place doesn't have any more...no, I can't reveal my sources.)
