     Mastering

Mastering is the final step in making your album and who you take it too can determine whether or not the sound is improved. The mastering signal path is one of the most important factors in determining the results. We use the best quality converters and an all tube signal path. In some cases we will even transfer your mixes to analog tape to warm up tracks that have been recorded and mixed digitally. The primary EQ and compression is done with all tube gear, but we also have some of the best vintage solid state gear with super warm transformers. Mike Caffrey's expert use of compression will make your mixes punchier rather than smaller. We take an unique approach to peak limiting by using an analog peak limiter.

Peak limiting is what makes mixes louder, but limiting your peaks is essentially a form of clipping which can add a distorted quality to you mixes. It's not the increase in (perceived) volume that makes albums sound distorted it's the fact that you've acutally squared off/clipped youryour waveform. Digital limiters like the L1 and L2 are very effective at limiting, thereby creating that distorted quality. By using an analog MOSFET limiter (designed by Greg Gualtieri of Pendulum Audio) we can provide you with an analog peak limiter that limits the peak in a less clipped manor and also adds no distortion below the limiting threshold. More importantly, we don't feel the need to make CDs excessively loud and will limit only as much as you ask us to.
