Daisy Cutter is four veterans of the NYC music scene. Guitarist/producer Mike Caffrey carefully picked members who's musical inclinations all compliment each other. Mike met vocalist Dave Horowitz while working on several Fontaine recordings including their album "NYC". Mike met bassist Frank Carreno while recording and then playing in the band Thirst and met drummer Ramsey Jones with recording the band Funkface.
These recordings come from a unique set of recording rules. Each song is limited to a single day of writing and recording. The instruments are set up an miked and then the band starts sharing ideas with the tape rolling and continues until a song is written and a good take is on tape. Fixes can be made but no additional recording is done after that session. The first song "Elements" is all live takes with just one bass punch and a second guitar track added, doubling the live one.
This raw and immediate approach is the essence of what rock and roll is about but has been lost due to modern recording techniques involving computer editing systems where people antagonize over details as microscopic as one 48,000th of a second (literally!). That's like fixing the crease in a broken-in leather jacket. It's just not rock and roll. The Daisy Cutter attitude is to start in the moment and then move full steam ahead.
Elements was written and recorded between 1:30 and 6:30pm on 9/22/02 and released on the web by 10:30pm. That's rock and roll.
10/6/02 - Daisy Cutter's second session. One man crowd written and recorded between 2:00 and 6:00pm, with an hour for lunch and a search for a missing jacket. Overdubs from 6:00 to 7:30, mixed by 9:00pm.
11/17/02 - The third session: U.S. Out of NYC. If after Spetember 11th you went down to Ground Zero and dug bodies out of the rubble pile by hand (like one band member did), thank you. If you went down to Ground Zero to have your picture taken in front of the ruins of the WTC, this song is for you. We recorded seven tracks of all four band members singing so that there are 28 voices giving you the message loud and clear.
